Katie's Homework
Math is something I deal with on a daily basis as I help my sister with her homework. Most of her homework has some mathematical relationship, even if it's not math. For social studies, we worked hard at doing math problems from the Mayan Empire. The Mayan's complex use of lines and dots really threw me for a loop. Then in her science class we worked on mathematical conversions of the weights of protons and electrons. My favorite part of helping Katie is doing pre-algebra. The way the problems come so nicely to solution is fun. While doing math in social studies was challenging, it is nice to come to a finite solution at the end of a pre-algebra problem.

While Katie is practicing her flute we use math. Both for the counting of beats and notes and for keeping track of how long she has played. It amazes me how much math is apart of our homework routine. The most challenging part of Katie's homework is when we have to time-manage her schedule. She is such a procrastinator that it often takes her ten times longer than necessary to get one assignment done. So we set timers to keep her on track. My favorite part is when our parents come home, because she magically picks her speed up. I am sure that if I compared the rates of how fast she does her homework when I am around and when my parents are home they would be drastically different.
